INSTANT EDITORIAL: Don't Be Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolves
"Football must succeed at Notre Dame!"
Thus spoke Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick to the Chicago Tribune and beyond the Windy City.
A word to the Weis is sufficient. Charlie knows for whom the bell tolls. He need not ask.
So much for ND sports politics.
It is our opinion and that of our western correspondent who makes frequent treks from his home in Lake Tahoe to the "Biggest Little City in the World" that, if the Irish can keep Nevada's QB Colin Kaepernick scrambling and seized behind the line of scrimmage, and RB Luke Lippincott et al struggling and stopped short of the line, tell Fergus O'Casey it's time for a pint and celebration talk.....the wolf hunt is over.
Yes, the Reno community hasn't been this excited about football since the decades-ago days of QB Heath and most of the other University of Nevada starters who kept winning until it was alleged that most of them never attended classes, yet got good grades and a whole helluva lot of money to spend in the casinos and those beckoning houses with the little red lights.
Now, UNR is back to football prominence and everything is on the up and up and very laudable since Chris Ault has been head coach these many years. This is a damn good team and no one should be ashamed that the Irish are opening the season against them. There will be some 3,000 Pack fans to cheer their team on.....but to no avail.
The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame have re-united with pigskin tradition long out of grasp. Make no mistake, the lads are ready to play like champions and, by God, be coached like champions.
This is a talented squad, deep and determined. They have speed and strength where they're needed and a cadre of good hands men who will be open and looking for balls tossed by Jimmy Clausen, not of limousine fame, but of leadership and dead aim.
Okay, Charlie Weis is on the hot seat, and that is where he deserves to be. A big win that's impressive on both sides of the ball, will bring him down to a much more comfortable place.

I'll give you this: We need to be optimistic going into this season and this first game. I think it will be close and ND won't stop Kaepernick and those talented backs, but squeeze out a vuctory
that may not be as impressive as you think and I would like.
Notre Dame 31 Nevada 24
ND does not have the wherewithall this first game and against this team to stop the pistol offense, but the Irish have a stronger arsenal of offensive weapons. ND should put up 40+ points and Nevada in the low 30s. Go Irish!
I, too, wish Charlie Weis the best in this his fifth intern season as ND Coach. I donot however believe he has the right stuff to mold and lead this very talented team. I am surprised that you do. ND will eke out a win by a small margin...and I bet it won't be an easy victory.
I do remember the scandal surrounding the Nevada team in the late 40s or early 50s. They had a great passer who wasn't a student.
This time around they have a great student-passer, great running backs, and a great innovative coach. But that's not enough to beat this ND team.
Irish 42
Wolfpack 21
I am somewhat stunned by the optimism of your instant editorial.
The South Bend billboard has it right that Weis is still in his fifth year of coaching internship.
ND will win the game...in a struggle, not because of Charlie, but in spite of him.
ND will win but still will not answer a lot of questions. You are correct to say this a damn good Nevada team, as they are and will prove it. I hope that not only will the Irish win but I hope they show some toughness. That is what I will be looking for. Be tough Irish!
Oh yeah and Go Irish!
Broguesters, you can't be serious that Weis is up for the challenge that Nevada will give his on-field coaching. Look, The Ego Landed a few years ago and he hasn't gotten off the ground yet. College coaching is not his niche--certainly the head spot. I do like the talent and speed on this team,
but unsure of the frontline defense. I'll give this one to ND, however--31 to 27.
I expect to see a better ND team than last season but how much better remains to be seen. Hard to imagine will be significantly.
