If Irish Go Spartan (like in frugal) Then MSU Goes Three Zip
Instant Editorial:
Spray those damn Irish helmets shiny gold, not gloomy tan like last week.
Now, the second gripe (actually concern).
It didn't materialize in the games one and two, maybe rarely, but Brian Kelly better put some high octane in the Notre Dame offensive tank, so to speak, or Michigan State is going to kick ass, big time.
The Irish can't rely on their defense to shut down Cousins and Baker. The play so far by Ethan Johnson, Brian Smith, Kerry Neal and, yes, Manti Te'o has been mediocre. Why Steve Filer doesn't play more is a big question, answered by some as result of his bland practice play. Well, that's how it goes for some players who aren't up until game time. Sit Smith, who is bland most of the time during official play.
Get that damn ball in the air, preferably long-distance bombing, to Michael Floyd and Tai-lor Jones. The offensive line will get its first real test, but they're looking good, getting better, and ready, we believe, to protect Crist's tosses and open holes for Armando and Cierre's rushing with some innovative play-calling. Hey, Jonas Gray performed well as a rusher and receiver.
Nate Montana had the better stats over Tommy Rees, but come on, the freshman has better skills and potential and deserves another chance as number one back-up. Why not bring up Hendrix and Massa and get them into play at some point. Let's face it, one of the three freshmen will be transferring next season--so let's see what they all got this year.
Instant Interview with College Football Tracker.
The Irish Brogue: You saw the ND-UM game. What went wrong?
CF Tracker: Without Crist, Notre Dame's offense is in serious trouble, Coach Kelly had a cold hand in the first half, poor play-calling, and a defense that could not rise to the occasion against a one-man show in the first thirty minutes and in the clutch with three minutes to go in the lead. Shades of Charlie Weis.
The Irish Brogue: How do you see the ND-MSU game going?
CF Tracker: The Irish need to re-establish their running game, excellent against Purdue; get Floyd and Jones more involved on long passes.. The defense has got to get the job done consistently at the line of scrimmage and not so much in the backfield by the safeties. MSU has a potent passing and running attack and, I believe, too much for the Irish to handle. The Spartans win by two touchdowns and enter the top 25.
It is time for the Irish faithful to kneel and say a prayer to Our Lady in this time of need, and the Irish need to beat Michigan State and get back into the positive State of Buzz.
