Lads From Zion On A Mission
INSTANT EDITORIAL
What could be worse: Father Jenkins receiving a long-distance phone call from God Almighty---and it's originating in Salt Lake City or the Lads from the Land of Zion (in the form of the University of Utah football team) coming on a mission to the south bend of broken dreams (in the form of the University of Notre Dame football team...and its faithful)?
Remember that Utah's Mormon boys outnumber Notre Dame's LDSers.
Actually, it should be a helluva game Saturday with "pride" being the watchword for both teams. The Utes having been eaten alive by the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University last week and the Fighting Irish desperately trying to become bowl eligible and showing little reason why they should be.
Utah has shown a lot of pride over the past few years under one of the best coaches nobody has ever hear of: Kyle Whittingham (although, Urban Meyer certainly remembers him). Some folks think that the Utes' weaknesses were exposed by TCU, but don't count on it, especially if you are rooting for ND, whose myriad weaknesses on both sides of the ball have been exposed by teams not in the same league with the boys from Fort Worth.
At the moment, Notre Dame's player-performance has shown little pride...or passion, and am not sure about purpose, either.
Yet, this could all change this weekend with an aggressive showing and victory against a ranked team, also putting the Irish on a strong route to a bowl game in "who cares where" and the 15 practices it represents, not to mention what could end up being a winning season.
The Notre Dame-Utah game, when you start throwing numbers around, can be the turning point, the turn-around, a true test of pride. Do the Fighting Irish have what it takes? Let's find out.
Tune in Saturday.
