E-Mails After The Big House Blues
The Irish Brogue had several E-Mails following the heartbreaking loss to Michigan. Herewith are a handful of samples.
E-Mail From Casper/South Dakota: Notre Dame is a nervous team--shaky and without a killer's confidence--playing not to win but rather not to lose. Therefore 0-2; miscues notwithstanding. This is the major problem with the football program, and has been for years. When this attitude/strategy ends so too will the win/loss column.
E-Mail from Fred/Iowa: Tommy Rees seems to be stuck in the pocket, almost immobile, with eyes
(nearly) open only for Michael Floyd. How can you or the opponent miss them? I like the kid and wish him well, but he does the Irish no service with tunnel vision and an immovable body. He is no dual threat and I believe that is contrary to Brian Kelly's spread offense QB. Wherefore art thou, Golson?
E-Mail From Helen/Indiana: Swagger! Notre Dame comes up empty in this category. The one important element that could make a real difference to the rest of the season and beyond is a belief in oneself and the team as a whole that turns into an energy and attitude. When it's there, it can be seen and it can be felt by everyone including the opposing team in the form of a fear factor. Where is the Irish Swagger? It hasn't been seen in a long while. This team needs to reclaim their lost enthusiasm, their lost passion to win--their lost swagger and make it anew.
E-Mail from Robert/Maryland: We know that turnovers, penalties, and a defensive stand that didn't materialize when needed were the keys to two ND losses against teams they should have beaten. It has been a painful---and ugly--start. If the Fighting Irish can't turn the tables on ranked Michigan State, I see a 7-5 season once again. I do hope Kelly will give Golson a shot, Rees is too predictable and immobile; Also Tuitt and Lynch rushing MSU's gifted passer.
E-Mail from Angelo/California: I have been in need of some seriously good comedy. Thank you Notre Dame for providing no short supply of hysterical laughter; exactly what I needed. I will continue to tune in, ready for a fresh batch of continuous laughs. Hey, Fighting Irish, your script is right on cue. Do you guys rehearse this every-Saturday routine? If you all keep these "comedic sketches" up, a standing ovation is in order. I'll be watching.
INSTANT EDITORIAL: The Fighting Irish had Michigan State on the ropes last season, until Coach D'Antonio snookered them with a fake punt for a touchdown and the victory. There can be no turnovers, no penalties, no lapses by the defense against this veteran and well-mentored Spartan team. Correct these deficiencies and mount a pass rush that matters---and the lads from South Bend get their first win of the season. A big win!
