Air Force Offense: Flying High; Defense: Grounded
Observation: It isn't enough that the Air Force Academy has one of the best rushing offenses in the nation, they also have a quarterback who can throw the ball with the best of them.
Notre Dame is going to have its hands (and feet) full of it this Saturday at South Bend, trying to snare Falcons on the ground and in the air. This should be the toughest test for the Fighting Irish to date.
As of this game, Bob Diaco and his defense have not shown all that well against option quarterbacks, especially those who can run and pass.....and have their wits about them!!
It will take an aggressive and highly disciplined defense in the trenches, at linebackers, and in the secondary to contain and beat the Falcons. Win there and the game is victory number 4, because the defense of the AFA is certainly nothing for the cadets to write home about---and the Irish offense has become praiseworthy, almost "letter-perfect" by backs---Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray.
When the Lads from Leprechaunville are efficient, they can play with anyone in the country.
E-Mail from Irish Miss/Indiana: Am I mistaken that the special teams of Notre Dame have been mediocre to inferior? I have been very depressed by their over-all showing to this point on the schedule/
The Irish Brogue: Mediocre is pretty close. With the exception of the touchdown run by George Atkinson, runbacks on kickoffs are below average and the blocking has been poor. John "fair-catch" Goodman has been somewhat of an embarrassment in "returning" (are you kidding?) punts. Speaking of punts, our little guy is not like his father or uncle in getting the ball down the field. His punts, for the most part, have been failed ones, if you will. Our other kicker, Kyle Brindza, has shown no consistentcy to get the ball in the end zone. It seems like he's aiming for the 15-yard line. Special teams will make the difference as the schedule enfolds, for better or for worse. No prediction from this corner.
It's going to be one helluva game this weekend---expect a high score (preferably by Notre Dame)
