SoGoesSoCal Game, SoGoesND Season
Before thinking about the importance of the Southern California game, don't think about the miscue-mania that led to losses at the top of the schedule---rather, think about letting the Air Force Academy pile up 565 yards and more than 30 points despite which ND team was playing. Forget about coach Brian Kelly's spin, "not-to-worry," victory. The defense was deplorable and the Irish are not in the top 25 because of the dismal-D performance. Make no mistake!
Now, on to USC. A win here will put ND in the top teams' roster and give them the momentum to finish in a BCS Bowl, and, who knows, a victory along the way over Stanford. Shut down Matt Barkley, Woods and Tyler and down go the Trojans. Their defense can't stop the Irish offense. Barkley's the Key!!
On the other hand, a loss to the Men of Troy could mean deflated egos and attitude, as well as losses to the Cardinal, a very good Wake Forest, and perhaps Navy. The Sun Bowl would them beckon.
Why the Las Vegas oddsmakers have given The Fighting Irish an 8.5 point spread challenges betting logic, but, what the hell, here's a Century Note to back it. Our preference is still to wager at thoroughbred race tracks---like Churchill Downs for the upcoming Breeder's Cup Classic: Go Uncle Mo!!
Notre Dame is pretty healthy going into the night game. And, with a relatively proven Andrew Hendrix as a sometime package passer/runner, the Irish should fare well on offense, heralded by Michael Floyd, Tyler Eifert, Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray along with improving Tommy Rees. Hopefully, the defense (especially the secondary) is up to pre-AFA standard, and the damn special teams start performing BCS caliber or at least above average.
This is the defining game for the Lads of South Bend.....and for coach Kelly, as well.
